Prothrombin -- See Also Coagulants

Agents that cause clotting.

Prothrombin Time -- See Also Blood Coagulation

The process of the interaction of BLOOD COAGULATION FACTORS that results in an insoluble FIBRIN clot.

Protium -- See Hydrogen

The first chemical element in the periodic table with atomic symbol H, and atomic number 1. Protium (atomic weight 1) is by far the most common hydrogen isotope. Hydrogen also exists as the stable isotope DEUTERIUM (atomic weight 2) and the radioactive isotope TRITIUM (atomic weight 3). Hydrogen forms into a diatomic molecule at room temperature and appears as a highly flammable colorless and odorless gas.

Proto-Oncogene Proteins c-bcl-1 -- See Cyclin D1

Protein encoded by the bcl-1 gene which plays a critical role in regulating the cell cycle. Overexpression of cyclin D1 is the result of bcl-1 rearrangement, a t(11;14) translocation, and is implicated in various neoplasms.

Protoheme -- See Heme

The color-furnishing portion of hemoglobin. It is found free in tissues and as the prosthetic group in many hemeproteins.

Proton-Motive Force -- See Also Hydrogen-Ion Concentration

The normality of a solution with respect to HYDROGEN ions; H+. It is related to acidity measurements in most cases by pH = log 1/2[1/(H+)], where (H+) is the hydrogen ion concentration in gram equivalents per liter of solution. (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed)

Proton Pump Inhibitor -- See Proton Pump Inhibitors

Compounds that inhibit H(+)-K(+)-EXCHANGING ATPASE. They are used as ANTI-ULCER AGENTS and sometimes in place of HISTAMINE H2 ANTAGONISTS for GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX.

Proton Pumps antagonists & inhibitors -- See Proton Pump Inhibitors
